ENDORSEMENTS: Our Recommendations on Santa Monica Ballot Measures
One can always count on a busy election season in Santa Monica. But even for that very active seaside town, nine local ballot measures are a lot to digest. The following are our recommendations (some earning more explanation than others).
ENDORSEMENTS: Fisch and Puza for Culver City Council
Culver City is changing, and for the better. Gone are the days when cranks like Steve Rose had a stranglehold on business and civic affairs, and the city tried to maintain a veneer of the sheer whiteness of decades past. The city is rich in diversity and is now more regularly electing diverse leaders. Its city council is taking a progressive tack in encouraging a lot of affordable housing development, making the city friendlier and safer for cyclists and pedestrians, adopting a rent control system, beginning to reimagine policing, ending dangerous oil drilling, and even working toward a policy on reparations for African Americans. Engaged students are fighting for their right to vote in city and school board elections, and have put the issue to voters this year.
ENDORSEMENTS: Raskin, Torosis, Zernitskaya for Santa Monica City Council
In 1995’s “The American President,” screenwriter Aaron Sorkin gave these beautiful words to fictional President Andrew Shepherd in the dramatic press conference scene near the end of the movie: “America isn’t easy. America is advanced citizenship. You’ve got to want it bad, ‘cause it’s gonna put up a fight.” Santa Monica is much the same way. And this year, with the very survival of rent control essentially on the ballot, we recommend electing Ellis Raskin, Caroline Torosis, and Natalya Zernitskaya to the city council. We also have very kind words about candidates Jesse Zwick and Albin Gielicz, but more on them in a moment.
ENDORSEMENT: Lindsey Horvath for County Supervisor
Bob Hertzberg is a 1990s Democrat. Lindsey Horvath is a 2022 Democrat. We strongly opt for the latter and hope you will join us in voting for Lindsey Horvath for 3rd District Supervisor representing the Westside and the San Fernando Valley.
