Los Angeles Political Endorsements
ENDORSEMENT: Lola Smallwood-Cuevas for State Senate, District 28
Spanning portions of the Westside including Mar Vista, Del Rey, Culver City and Ladera Heights, all the way to West Adams near downtown and southwest and south central Los Angeles, much of the newly drawn 28th State Senate District has been represented for the last few years by Sydney Kamlager, who is leaving to try and replace Karen Bass in Congress. Before that, it was represented by Supervisor Holly Mitchell. The district is worthy of a successor in their progressive tradition, and we believe that candidate is Lola Smallwood-Cuevas.
ENDORSEMENT: Katy Young Yaroslavsky for L.A. Council District 5
In Los Angeles’s 5th Council District (CD 5), which makes up the parts of West L.A. that surround Beverly Hills and includes the Fairfax District, Cheviot Hills, and Westwood, voters have a choice between two excellent candidates vying to represent them in city hall. Both Katy Young Yaroslavsky and Sam Yebri are very bright attorneys with impressive track records of public and community service. Both claim deep roots in CD 5, and both support many of the same measures, even ones as specific as developing a stronger tree canopy for the district. It makes it difficult for our publication to choose a candidate to endorse for the November 8 election. However, there is a choice to be made, and we endorse Katy Young Yaroslavsky for the seat.
ENDORSEMENT: Los Angeles Voters Should Vote Yes on Measure ULA
California, and certainly the Greater Los Angeles Area, continues to face a staggering housing and homelessness crisis. Many attempts are underway to confront it, but funding for affordable housing is lacking and costs per unit continue to rise at rates anyone – including builders – finds staggering. There is something residents of the City of Los Angeles can do to help in a BIG way, and that’s supporting Measure ULA on the November 8 ballot. Measure ULA places a real estate transfer tax on sales of properties over $5 Million. It is estimated to raise an impressive $875 Million — possibly up to $923 Million — per year to, as the Yes on ULA campaign says:
ENDORSEMENTS: Our Recommendations on Santa Monica Ballot Measures
One can always count on a busy election season in Santa Monica. But even for that very active seaside town, nine local ballot measures are a lot to digest. The following are our recommendations (some earning more explanation than others).
