Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights: A Look Back at the Beginning
The Santa Monica of the 1970s was a good place for a low or moderate-income renter household to find a home. As a result, it was an economically diverse community with over 70% of all residents being renters, many retired living on fixed incomes. Nearly half of Santa Monica renters were in low-income households.
ENDORSEMENT: Karen Bass for Mayor of Los Angeles
There are moments in time that call for a certain candidate to take center stage. For too many voters right now, disgruntled by a rise in certain kinds of crime and an ongoing homelessness crisis, that candidate is the warmed-over version of Richard Riordan known as Rick Caruso. However, we feel the real profile in courage whose moment has come is Congresswoman Karen Bass, and we endorse her to be L.A.’s next mayor.
ENDORSEMENT: Kenneth Mejia For L.A. City Controller
Westside Voice is far more interested in the Tweets of Mejia’s that are sending shudders through City Hall, the LAPD, and the zipped-up status quo. We like that he scares the crap out of some establishment Democrats. We like his sense of humor, and his impressive grassroots campaign. He’s young, and when he’s not practicing the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), he can be found DJ-ing a progressive block party. A qualification? No – but how many do you know find their way to city hall in part because they can boast some mad beats? (Is that how you say it? Hey, we don’t pretend to be cool)
ENDORSEMENT: How to Vote for Judges
Unless information comes in that favors or detracts from a particular candidate, Westside Voice will defer to the endorsed candidates for judge by the Los Angeles County Democratic Party.
