Westside Education Workers Mobilize for New Contracts at UCLA and SMMUSD

This week, education workers’ unions in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) and UCLA are bargaining for new contracts. Both units, belonging to SEIU Local 99 and AFSCME 3299 respectively, represent education and service workers. Parents and students have joined the locals at their rallies and school board meetings to signal support for the workers’ demands.

State Receivership Leads to Inglewood School Closures

When Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) announced the closure of five schools last week, most were angry but few were surprised. District administrator James Morris stated that the closures were due to low enrollment rates, but that didn’t stop students from affected schools from staging walkouts.

BHUSD, the Inevitable AI Bully, and What AI Has to Say About It

On March 6, Beverly Hills Unified School District (BHUSD) board members voted in a closed session to expel five Beverly Vista Middle School students following the spread of explicit deep fake AI-generated images of their classmates. The images were superimposed pictures of real students’ faces on simulated nude bodies generated by artificial intelligence.

Charter School Association Sues LAUSD Over Co-location Policy

Last Tuesday, the California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) filed a lawsuit against LAUSD for the district’s charter co-location policy. This policy potentially mediates or complicates the thorny implementation of Proposition 39 and the contested practice of co-location in resource-strapped communities. Prop. 39, a state law, stipulates that public school facilities should be shared equally by charter and non-charter schools alike. If non-charter schools have unused space on their campus, they should share that space with a charter school. However critics of the implementation of Prop. 39 have argued that the law has been interpreted beyond the mandated “reasonably equivalent” accommodations of charter schools.
