A Conversation with Westside State Senator Ben Allen

Ben Allen is a California State Senator who represents the 24th Senate District, which includes a good many of us here on the Westside as well as those in the South Bay. He is a Democrat who was first elected in 2014 after serving six years on the School Board of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. Allen is a graduate of Santa Monica High School and holds a law degree from UC Berkeley.

Beverly Hills Voters — Vote NO on Measures B & C

By |May 4th, 2023|

In just about two weeks, an obscure Special Election is taking place in Beverly Hills. On Tuesday, May 23, mail-in ballots come due and voters decide whether or not to approve the development of a massive new, super-luxury hotel to move forward in an area that now includes the now-vacant Paley Center for Media’s iconic museum and archives, at the intersection of Little Santa Monica Blvd and Beverly. We strongly encourage Beverly Hills voters to vote “No” on Measures B and C, which will prevent the ritzy Cheval Blanc Hotel to be built.

California Environmental Voters Practices the Politics of Gratitude

By |March 29th, 2023|

Last week, we received an interesting piece of mail. Resembling a two-sided campaign mailing, on the “postage paid” side with our address was an image of the globe on fire, and the words “Floods – Drought – Pollution” followed by the question, “Who is fighting the effects of climate change?” On the flip side, in big, all-caps wording is the name “BEN ALLEN” (our State Senator) followed by the tagline, “Is Answering the Call” with a couple of paragraphs of support language and four specific bullet points outlining specific votes and accomplishments the Senator has contributed in the last year. A nice picture of Ben in a suit accompanies the wording, which ends with the solicitation, “Call 310-318-6994 to thank Ben Allen for his leadership in 2022 and now 2023” next to the logo for the California Environmental Voters Education Fund, the 501c3 nonprofit side of the well-known environmental group once known as the California League of Conservation Voters.

Take Redistricting Out of the Hands of the L.A. City Council

By |February 16th, 2023|

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles City Council voted 11-2 to oppose a piece of state legislation, Senate Bill (SB) 52, by L.A.’s own Maria Elena Durazo, which would give the state legislature the authority to establish and Independent Redistricting Commission for the City of L.A. Those 11 Councilmembers should be embarrassed.
