Santa Monicans for Renters Rights (SMRR) Elects New Steering Committee Member; Discusses Several Timely Issues
New Santa Monica City Council members Caroline Torosis and Jesse Zwick were among several prominent faces seated in small folding chairs inside a Grant Elementary classroom Sunday afternoon. Santa Monica for Renters’ Rights (SMRR) elected two new members to its steering committee at its annual SMRR Convention. Every two years, the organization elects or re-elects members to its Steering Committee. Ellis Raskin and Kay Ambriz were newly elected to the committee, while the nine members who had served on the previous year’s committee were reelected.

They made appalling, racist remarks about various groups and people, especially about Blacks and including about my young son. A year later, as people look back, they keep asking me for my thoughts. I’ve written about what I heard, what I felt, and what I think was missing from the discussions sparked by the scandal.
Barrington Plaza Residents and Allies Protest at Douglas Emmett Headquarters
The residents of Barrington Plaza aren’t going down without a fight, and they are making their voices heard loud and clear. Several community organizations focused on housing and renter's rights joined residents of the Barrington Plaza apartment complex at the Santa Monica headquarters of complex landlord Douglas Emmett last Thursday. The landlord is looking to evict the entirety of the building under the Ellis Act to install fire sprinklers after several fires have plagued the building in recent years. But residents have filed suit in response.

As rising eviction rates cause fear of yet another spike in homelessness and housing insecurity, hundreds of renters in West L.A. are about to be thrown out of their homes in the largest mass eviction in Los Angeles in decades. It would set a dangerous precedent – and it is based on lies and fraud. Corporate real estate giant Douglas Emmett Inc. is pushing to evict every tenant from the 712 rent-regulated units of Barrington Plaza. These are middle- and working-class families, seniors, and young professionals getting a start in life. They include rideshare drivers, retail employees, nurses, social workers, and school teachers. Some have lived there for decades.
