Gascon, Prang Among Officials Celebrating Pride Progress Flag at Culver High
Elected officials in Culver City and around Los Angeles came to a ceremony celebrating the raising of a new Pride Progress Flag at the Culver City High School campus to show support for the many gender and sexuality-based communities that its students may be a part of.
L.A. Educators and Schools Continue Struggle for LGBTQ+ Justice
Last summer, right-wing extremists made headlines in Southern California for months of organized anti-LGBTQ+ attacks on school districts. While most school districts in Los Angeles have refused to concede to demands – extremists have called for the removal of LGBTQ+ teachers, inclusive curriculum, and Pride flags – a concerted campaign to remove protections for LGBTQ+ students, transgender students in particular, has continued in nearby districts. Parents and staff at Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) who successfully fended off the attacks last year are working with neighboring districts to recognize and adequately respond to anti-LGBTQ+ threats and policies.
UCLA Workers Join the Ongoing UAW Local 4811 Strike
On Tuesday morning, 6,400 academic workers represented by United Auto Workers (UAW) 4811 began their strike at UCLA. They joined 2,000 UC Santa Cruz workers in a rolling “stand up” strike, a model of calling for strikes at multiple worksites popularized by the UAW. UC Davis members also joined the strike on Tuesday. In total, there are 14,000 UAW Local 4811 members on strike across the UC system.
State Budget, Local Exodus Loom Over Inglewood Unified
At the Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, parents and teachers lined up to express their frustration with the state of education in the district. Under receivership, the district has struggled against declining enrollment and lack of autonomy. The district announced the closure of five schools in April, citing financial necessity. The IUSD Board of Education has been relegated to that of an advisory board under Administrator James Morris, who was appointed by the L.A. County Office of Education. Board members, in reality, currently have little power.
