UCLA Community Objects to Arrests of Pro-Palestinian Students and Other Observers
Yesterday morning at UCLA, more than 45 students and other community members were arrested by campus police (UCPD) in a parking structure on campus. The group, a coalition of UCLA students and faculty, some of whom two weeks ago raised a Palestine Solidarity Encampment, were detained for four hours in the parking lot and later charged by UCPD for conspiracy to commit burglary. Members of the press and legal observers were also arrested. Local leaders, UCLA faculty, and labor groups condemned the mass arrest.
Metro Makes Free Student Ridership Program Permanent
GoPass, a pilot program that grants fare-free rides to L.A. county K-14 students, was made permanent by the L.A. Metro Board of Directors late last month. The program, which began in 2021 to help families mitigate the financial harms of COVID-19, received resounding support from the Board, students, and district officials during the April 25 meeting.

Early Thursday morning, students erected tents at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in solidarity with the Palestinian people. By early afternoon, the encampment on Royce Quad was full of tents and surrounded by a barrier wall made of pallets and plywood. Students lounged on blankets, led chants, and readied themselves for a protracted protest – chief among their demands was UC’s divestment from military and weapons manufacturers, profiteers of war and, students say, the ongoing destruction of Gaza by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
