Public Safety Takes Center Stage as WeHo Council Passes 2022-2023 Budget
“I’m happy to acknowledge this budget is balanced,” said West Hollywood City Manager David Wilson in beginning the staff presentation of the final draft proposed Operating Budget and Capital Expenditure Plan for 2022-2023. This was welcome news, as for the last couple of years, the city had been operating under a deficit due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
WeHo Council Wrestles with Idea of a Vacancy Tax on Property Owners
On Tuesday evening, the West Hollywood City Council struggled to come to a consensus on whether to place a local ballot measure on the November 2022 ballot which would implement a commercial and residential vacancy tax on property owners that leave their properties unrented. Such a measure would require a two-thirds voter support threshold to pass because the tax specifies that proceeds would fund affordable housing development. Single-family homes, duplexes, and condos would be exempt.
BOS Race – Three Vying to Replace Kuehl as Supervisor
On June 7th, voters in L.A. County’s 3rd Supervisorial District, which makes up a good portion of the Westside and most of the San Fernando Valley, will be choosing between two State Senators and a West Hollywood councilmember to replace retiring Supervisor Sheila Kuehl. Senator Bob Hertzberg, whose district covers a wide swath of the Valley, and Henry Stern, which covers another large portion as well as Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Malibu and Westlake, will each square off with West Hollywood Councilmember Lindsey Horvath. All three are Democrats.
WeHo Council Moves to Ban Non-Compostable Food Service Products
Last evening, the West Hollywood City Council unanimously passed a motion to eventually ban local eateries’ use of all non-compostable single-use foodware containers and accessories. The effort, led by councilmembers John Erickson and Mayor Pro-Tem Sepi Shyne, follows a trend adopted by other area cities and the City and County of San Francisco, among others.
