A Phone-Free Plan for L.A. Unified Takes Shape

Phone-free schools are on the horizon for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), where the district is rolling out a new phone policy that will be in effect in a few months. Over a year after the Hamas attack on Israel, many cities in Southern California, including Santa Monica, have adopted resolutions calling for a ceasefire citing the unjust deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians as a result of Israel’s response. One of the cities that has not is Culver City, despite calls from residents and a recommendation from one of its committees to do so.

Students and allies convened at Los Angeles Unified (LAUSD) headquarters on Tuesday to demand the district keep its commitments to Black students. The Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP), a reparative initiative introduced in the district in 2021 to address historic and ongoing inequities specifically harming Black students, split a $36.5 Million budget between schools with significant populations of Black students, with the majority of funding going to those schools with high needs.

Prominent women in the entertainment industry came together on Tuesday for an event at the Nova Exhibition in Los Angeles, co-hosted by Sherry Lansing, former CEO of Paramount Pictures, Jody Gerson, CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group, Dana Goldberg, chief creative officer of Skydance Media, and Dr. Marcy Gringlas, co-founder and president of Seed the Dream Foundation. The event, organized by I Believe Israeli Women, a joint initiative of Seed the Dream Foundation and Jewish Women International, offered a private exhibition tour and a powerful panel discussion featuring a Nova Festival survivor and advocates.
