Bestselling author and renowned policy advocate Heather McGhee visited Santa Monica last Thursday and delivered a mesmerizing address to a few hundred at the performing arts center at John Adams Middle School. She was a featured portion of Santa Monica College’s Spring Symposium, an annual event sponsored by SMC’s Public Policy Institute. The address she highlighted a three-year journey around the U.S. that culminated in her 2021 book, "The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together."

In just about two weeks, an obscure Special Election is taking place in Beverly Hills. On Tuesday, May 23, mail-in ballots come due and voters decide whether or not to approve the development of a massive new, super-luxury hotel to move forward in an area that now includes the now-vacant Paley Center for Media’s iconic museum and archives, at the intersection of Little Santa Monica Blvd and Beverly. We strongly encourage Beverly Hills voters to vote “No” on Measures B and C, which will prevent the ritzy Cheval Blanc Hotel to be built.

Last week, the Santa Monica City Attorney’s Office sponsored a symposium on the history of Fair Housing policy both locally and in California. The Federal Fair Housing Act is celebrating its 55th anniversary this month, having passed in 1968.
L.A. County’s “State of Black Los Angeles” Report Highlights Disparities in Community
An annual report released by the County’s Chief Executive Office highlighted some of the struggles that the Black community in Los Angeles has faced before and after the pandemic. As part of its response to the George Floyd shooting and subsequent public fervor, the LA County Board of Supervisors ordered that an annual State of Black Los Angeles report be issued to provide updates on “the outcomes of Black Angelenos in the topics of health (physical and mental), education, employment, law enforcement, justice, housing, and homelessness.”
