Santa Monica Rent Control Board Announces 2023 Rent Increase of 2.8%

"The Santa Monica Rent Control Board has announced a 2.8 percent general adjustment (annual rent increase) to controlled rents effective September 1, 2023.  Following a public hearing on June 8th, the Board voted to limit the amount of the increase to $67 for units with current Maximum Allowable Rents (MARs) of $2,375 and above. Both the general adjustment (GA) and the maximum increase (ceiling) that the Board may choose to apply are determined by formulas in the Santa Monica rent control law.

Bestselling author and renowned policy advocate Heather McGhee visited Santa Monica last Thursday and delivered a mesmerizing address to a few hundred at the performing arts center at John Adams Middle School. She was a featured portion of Santa Monica College’s Spring Symposium, an annual event sponsored by SMC’s Public Policy Institute. The address she highlighted a three-year journey around the U.S. that culminated in her 2021 book, "The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together."

Santa Monica Council Approves Settlement Agreement with Developers Over “Builder’s Remedy” Permits

On Tuesday evening, the Santa Monica City Council considered a settlement agreement between the city and developer “WS.” If a locality has not adopted a housing element in substantial compliance with state law, developers may propose housing development projects that do not comply with either the zoning or the general plan using the “Builder’s Remedy.” Proposed housing projects filed under this provision must either offer 20 percent of the total units available to lower-income households or make 100 percent of all units available for moderate or middle-income households.
