Santa Monicans for Renters Rights (SMRR) Elects New Steering Committee Member; Discusses Several Timely Issues
New Santa Monica City Council members Caroline Torosis and Jesse Zwick were among several prominent faces seated in small folding chairs inside a Grant Elementary classroom Sunday afternoon. Santa Monica for Renters’ Rights (SMRR) elected two new members to its steering committee at its annual SMRR Convention. Every two years, the organization elects or re-elects members to its Steering Committee. Ellis Raskin and Kay Ambriz were newly elected to the committee, while the nine members who had served on the previous year’s committee were reelected.
Santa Monica Planning Staff Hosts Town Hall on Housing Element
The City of Santa Monica hosted a virtual town hall on Monday evening where staff explained the approach to developing affordable housing in the city and how that approach interacts with state laws. This affordable housing is generally developed through the Affordable Housing Production Program (AHPP), which has been a part of the city’s code since 1998.
City of Santa Monica to Offer Bystander Intervention Training on November 13 During United Against Hate Week
The City of Santa Monica is partnering with Right To Be to offer a virtual bystander intervention training for the community on Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, at 6 p.m. as part of its observance of United Against Hate Week. The training will empower community members to take an active role in standing up against hate and intolerance. The training is no-cost, open to all will provide attendees with tools to safely intervene when witnessing harassment in public spaces. Space is limited and registration is required. Santa Monica Council Votes to Support the “Justice for Renters Act” on 2024 Ballot
“The Costa-Hawkins Act has a very pernicious effect on our ability to control people’s financial ability to live in Santa Monica,” said Mayor Gleam Davis, who along with Councilmembers Caroline Torosis and Jesse Zwick, asked her colleagues to join them on Tuesday night in support of a statewide ballot measure – the Justice for Renters Act – that would repeal the 1995 law. It has qualified for the November 2024 ballot.
