Santa Monica Council Hears Mixed Report on 2023 Crime Statistics
On Tuesday evening, the Santa Monica City Council heard its annual update on crime statistics and severity from the Santa Monica Police Department’s (SMPD) Chief Ramon Batista. The initial takeaway from the report was there were 103,462 total calls for police service last year, which represented a one percent drop. However, there was an almost 10 percent increase in service actions initiated by officers themselves. Eighteen percent of all calls, or 18,939, were directly related to homelessness.

Last Thursday evening, the Santa Monica Rent Control Board (RCB) met to conduct its monthly business, but it was no ordinary meeting. That night, members of the community came out to thank Tracy Condon for an incredible 37-year career at the agency. She has served as Executive Director of the RCB since 2007.

Before it became a liberal and progressive beacon under the leadership of Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights and the Santa Monica Democratic Club, the City of Santa Monica officially promoted terrible policies of exclusion. Decades-long efforts by the Committee for Racial Justice (“CRJ”), historian Nina Fresco, and other community organizations and activists have brought to light the City’s use of eminent domain to target Black and Latino families and business owners in the Belmar Triangle and the Broadway and Pico Neighborhoods. As a community, we have since been on a path of learning, healing, and restitution with the ultimate goal of justice.
Santa Monica Men’s Soccer Falls to Redondo, 2-1, Ending CIF Hopes
The Santa Monica Vikings walked away Friday night with an unfortunate loss to the Redondo Sea Hawks. The Vikings were excited to play one last time on their home field and perhaps earn a CIF birth. Expectations were high.
