Malibu City Council Discusses Proposed 2023-2024 Budget
Last week, in a special Wednesday night session, the Malibu City Council discussed the proposed fiscal 2023-2024 budget as proposed by staff. It will be the first of four sessions for the public, either at the council or council committee level, to hear and respond to the proposal. These sessions will also allow the council to provide feedback and direction to city staff as they all work toward a finalized budget.
ENDORSEMENTS: Lieberman, Mignano, Rouse, and Tahvildaran-Jesswein for Santa Monica-Malibu Schools
School Districts and their School Boards became real punching bags during the heart of the COVID pandemic, none likely more so than that governing Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD). But using the best science they were given (and it would change at times!), and despite some clear academic and socializing deficits that have clearly resulted from students being home, I feel the district and its board have done comparatively well, and have continued to strive for improvement in student achievement and opportunity. Therefore, we believe Laurie Lieberman and Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswein deserve re-election for another term. We would like to see them joined by district parents Alicia Mignano and Stacy Rouse.
Malibu Council Opposes Latest Santa Monica College Bond Measure
On Monday evening, the Malibu City Council unanimously voted to strongly oppose the bond measure to support a $375 Million effort to fund an upgrade of facilities and build student housing at Santa Monica College (SMC).
City of Santa Monica Joins SMMUSD in Opposing Petition for District-based School Board Elections
In December of last year, a petition was submitted to the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) asking their Committee on School District Organization to establish District-based elections for seats on the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) Board. In February, by a vote of the city council, the City of Santa Monica joined the school district in opposing the petition, with an opening for the city to join litigation against the attempted change.
