Standing Up for the Women of Iran
Last week, Mayor Pro Tem Sepi Shyne adjourned a session of the West Hollywood City Council in the name of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman who was murdered by that country’s “Morality Police.” When elected in 2020, Shyne herself became the first out LGBTQ Iranian elected anywhere in the world, and became the West Hollywood council’s first elected woman of color.
EDITORIAL: Take the Win on Student Loan Debt
Westside Voice was in favor of canceling all student debt. And though President Biden didn’t get close to doing so, he put together a very strong package in our view as we learned more about what was inside it. We feel everyone should celebrate it as a win for millions of Americans.
EDITORIAL: Our Water Future Will Require Behavioral Change
Recent news of the Colorado River’s steep drop in water flow has reignited a conversation about future water needs and water use in California and the American West. The Colorado River is seeing its 23rd year of official drought according to the Bureau of Reclamation, while historically giant reservoirs like Lake Mead and Lake Powell suffer extremely low water levels. In addition, Lake Havasu is reportedly so low in water level that the hydropower its water flow feeds to Hoover Dam is at risk. Millions could be deemed powerless as a result.
EDITORIAL: We Applaud Culver City’s March Toward Reparations
To say that White Americans have a lot to answer for is the understatement of the last several centuries. But some cities, including Culver City, Santa Monica, and West Hollywood (and San Luis Obispo), are looking for ways to better understand their racist pasts and pay some kind of restitution to African Americans. City leaders have willingly accepted the encouragement they have received to give their Black residents a boost after centuries of racist policies which have done everything from holding them back to taking their lives.
