ENDORSEMENTS: Hall, Raskin, Snell, & Zernitskaya for Santa Monica City Council
Four years ago, the so-called “Change Slate” of Phil Brock, Oscar De La Torre, and Christine Parra was narrowly elected to the Santa Monica City Council. Many at the time attributed their victory over incumbent council members to the public’s stunned reaction to the events of May 31 of that year, when law enforcement concentrated its attention on peaceful protesters over the killing of George Floyd, and others, downtown and on Ocean Avenue. This focus left the rest of the city unguarded from a wave of violent looting that itself was a result of criminals taking advantage of societal shutdowns from COVID-19.
EDITORIAL: Christine Parra is Not a Serious Person
Santa Monica City Councilmember Christine Parra is a mystery. She came out of nowhere for many of us four years ago to be elected as a member of the so-called “change slate,” alongside Phil Brock and Oscar De La Torre. She has largely sat quietly at city council meetings other than to go along with their nativist and regressive agenda. She doesn’t seem like she enjoys the job, or governing in general for that matter. I honestly don’t know why she would want to run again other than to piss off the three council members she called “the liberal minority” and their allies in the city. And not for nothing – it’s pretty scary if they are the only liberals on a city council of seven representing what’s supposed to be a progressive city.
California’s Minimum Wage Increase: Voices of Relief and Challenges Ahead
Starting April 1, 2024, all fast-food restaurants in California are required to pay their employees $20 an hour. Citing the increase in inflation resulting in a cut to employee's hours and spending power, Governor Gavin Newsom signed the increase into law on September 28, 2023.
Editorial: “I Support Hotel Workers, but…” And Other Similar Tales
There’s something you hear a lot from people who claim liberal/progressive/forward-thinking views, but often seem to put conditions on their self-declared high-mindedness. And that is the word, “But.” Hold that thought.
