L.A. City Council Approves $30 Million Loan for Bus Stop Improvements
The City of Los Angeles is continuing its investment into public transportation with a renewed focus on bus shelters. A motion was passed with a 10-0 vote at Wednesday’s city council meeting that will directly invest $30 million from the Public Works Trust Fund into the creation and replacement of bus shelters around the City of Los Angeles. Council members Kevin de León, Eunisses Hernandez, Imelda Padilla, Curren Price and Monica Rodriguez were absent during the vote.
L.A. Controller Kenneth Mejia Reports Staggering Numbers Regarding Renter Evictions
In August, Los Angeles City Controller released a report stating that there were nearly 40,000 eviction notices slapped on renters from February – July 2023 filed in the City of L.A. On Monday, the controller’s office, through a press release, reported that they have received updated data from the Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD) through the month of August 2023 stating an additional 10,000 evictions*. Ergo, from February – August 2023, a staggering 50,000 eviction notices were filed with the City of L.A.
L.A. Councilmembers Launch Effort to Implement Safety Improvements on Hollywood Blvd.
Safety upgrades would cover a 2-mile stretch between Gower St and Lyman Pl, which is one of the busiest commercial corridors in the city Los Angeles City Councilmembers Hugo Soto-Martínez and Nithya Raman along with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) announced the beginning of community outreach for the Hollywood Boulevard Safety and Mobility Project. Community outreach and design will be completed by the winter of 2023 for implementation in 2024.
Barrington Plaza Residents and Allies Protest at Douglas Emmett Headquarters
The residents of Barrington Plaza aren’t going down without a fight, and they are making their voices heard loud and clear. Several community organizations focused on housing and renter's rights joined residents of the Barrington Plaza apartment complex at the Santa Monica headquarters of complex landlord Douglas Emmett last Thursday. The landlord is looking to evict the entirety of the building under the Ellis Act to install fire sprinklers after several fires have plagued the building in recent years. But residents have filed suit in response.
