Santa Monica Council Votes to Support the “Justice for Renters Act” on 2024 Ballot

“The Costa-Hawkins Act has a very pernicious effect on our ability to control people’s financial ability to live in Santa Monica,” said Mayor Gleam Davis, who along with Councilmembers Caroline Torosis and Jesse Zwick, asked her colleagues to join them on Tuesday night in support of a statewide ballot measure – the Justice for Renters Act – that would repeal the 1995 law. It has qualified for the November 2024 ballot.

Culver City Opens First Project Homekey Housing Site

An old Culver City motel will soon serve a new purpose. The lot that formerly housed Deano’s Motel and the Sunburst Motel at 3868 and 3900 Sepulveda Blvd. has officially completed its transformation into Culver City’s first Project Homekey site. 73 units split into sections of interim and permanent housing will be opened to help bring unhoused residents off the streets in small waves starting this month.

Despite Student Protest, CSU To Hike Tuition Over Next Five Years

Despite student protests, the California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees authorized a plan for multi-year tuition increases on September 13 that will raise rates by six percent annually for five years.  The Trustees argue the move is needed to help stabilize the university system’s financial situation.

Questions Remain as WeHo Council Adopts Amendment to Replace Protected Rental Units

The West Hollywood City Council took at least a temporary step Monday evening to ensure the number of affordable rental units is preserved as the city’s housing stock grows. Michelle Montenegro, from the long-range planning division of the Planning & Community Development Department, was on hand to present a proposed Zoning Text Amendment (ZTE) aligning replacement provisions for affordable units with state law.
