Participate in Watersports at Playa Del Rey Beach

Unlike some of the more popular beaches in West Los Angeles, Playa del Rey Beach maintains an uncrowded atmosphere. Enjoy the warm California sunshine and unwind on the sandy shores, or for the more adventurous, partake in a range of water sports such as surfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Rentals and lessons are available from local vendors, making it easy for beginners to get started. This beach’s relatively uncrowded waves are perfect for those looking to hone their skills.

Bike the Ballona Creek Bike Path

The Ballona Creek Bike Path is about seven miles long along Ballona Creek from Culver City to Marina del Rey. It runs right through the heart of Playa Del Rey, providing a route for biking, jogging, or walking. Bikers can enter the trail at any of the dozen gated entrances along the way. During the winter months and rainstorms, the river-level portion of the bike path can become flooded. Therefore, it’s always good to check the weather beforehand. It’s a picturesque and fun spot for a ride!

Visit the Ballona Wetlands

The Ballona Wetlands is one of the last remaining saltwater wetlands in Southern California. This 600-acre wetland is a nursery and habitat for marine and mudflat creatures. It is also a refuge for migrating birds and a source of tranquility for Playa del Rey. At Ballona Wetlands, you might spot egrets, herons, ducks, and other waterbirds. Mammals such as raccoons, opossums, and even the occasional coyote can also be found here. The National Audubon Society offers nature tours of the wetlands, which is one of the best ways to explore this verdant natural oasis.

Dine at Playa Provisions 

Established by Top Chef Winner Brooke Williamson and husband Nick Roberts, Playa Provisions is a unique space that includes four different restaurants nestled within one 7,000-square-foot, beachside location. King Beach Cafe serves casual breakfast and lunch fare. For dinner, Dockside exhibits both Brooke and Nick’s love for California coastal cuisine in an elegant dining room and patio. After your meal, stop by Small Batch for a pint of house-made ice cream, or sneak into the back and indulge in darker spirits at Grain Whiskey Bar. I checked out King Beach Cafe for lunch and was impressed with its extensive menu comprising delectable sandwiches and salads. I ordered the Lobster Roll ($26), which was the best I’ve ever had. It was a buttery, toasted bun filled with generous chunks of succulent lobster meat, lightly dressed with mayonnaise and a hint of lemon.

Nightcap at Bacari PDR

Bacari PDR is a trendy Italian restaurant and bar with a laid-back yet stylish setting that effortlessly marries rustic charm with modern amenities. Every weekend, Bacari PDR’s bar scene comes alive with lively energy, expertly crafted cocktails, and an impressive wine list. The bar’s signature concoctions showcase the mixologists’ artistry. I visited Bacari PDR for a nightcap and got a table on the charming outdoor patio, which is adorned with twinkling lights and greenery. I tried the Strawberry Fizz ($17), which consisted of vodka, fresh strawberries, lemongrass, lime, and soda water. This craft cocktail was perfectly balanced, refreshing, and hit the spot.

This quaint 22-key boutique hotel exudes timeless elegance with its Spanish colonial architecture and lush tropical gardens.
