Pacific Palisades needs no introduction. Situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains, this West Los Angeles neighborhood is rich in natural beauty. With its magnificent beaches, picturesque hiking trails, and charming ambiance, it offers locals and tourists the opportunity to connect with nature and the feeling of a small town. From unwinding in the beautiful Will Rogers State Beach to enjoying the spectacular vistas from the Santa Ynez Falls Trail, here are some fun things to do in Pacific Palisades.
Will Rogers State Historic Park
This 900-acre park features hiking trails, horseback riding, a museum dedicated to the legendary character Will Rogers, and even a working ranch. Located in the heart of Pacific Palisades, Will Rogers State Historic Park offers a tranquil escape from the busy urban life. This expansive sanctuary provides guests with a distinctive mix of natural beauty, cultural significance, and recreational opportunities. Several trails circle the park or lead into adjoining property. Among them, the strenuous Backbone Trail leads hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians through the Santa Monica Mountains for 67.8 miles to Point Mugu. Inspiration Point sits on a moderate two-mile loop, where you can view Catalina Island, the Los Angeles Basin, and the arching shoreline of Santa Monica Bay.

The Eames House is a Mid-Century Modern architectural landmark conceptualized in 1949 by husband-and-wife designers Charles and Ray Eames. It showcases their innovative approach to living and design. This iconic home seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor spaces, featuring large windows and open floor plans to create a harmonious connection with the encompassing natural environment. In September 2006, the Eames House was added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark. Presently, it continues to inspire architects and design enthusiasts, serving as a timeless symbol of mid-century modernism. When I visited the Eames House, I was very impressed by the Eames’ unique approach to design and their commitment to making everyday objects aesthetically pleasing and practical at the same time.

The Palisades Village offers a one-of-a-kind shopping and dining experience. This upscale outdoor shopping center boasts a curated collection of chic retail shops, local boutiques, eateries, and galleries, all set against the backdrop of the breathtaking Pacific Ocean. With its pedestrian-friendly layout, landscaping, and welcoming ambiance, it is a must-visit retail destination for locals and visitors alike. Some of my favorite stores at the Pacific Village include Misa Los Angeles, Favorite Daughter, Eres, Buck Mason, Golden Goose, Paige, and Serena & Lily. Furthermore, every Sunday, the Palisades Village hosts the Pacific Palisades California Certified Farmers Market, featuring vendors retailing fresh produce and beautiful local art.
Will Rogers State Beach has had several television shows and movies filmed on its shore, including the smash hit television show “Baywatch.” This hidden gem doesn’t get as busy as the nearby Malibu and Santa Monica beaches. Will Rogers State Beach is ideal for sunbathing and swimming and has over 3 miles of beachfrontage and about 103 acres of beach. This serene beach is excellent for families, as it is lined with volleyball courts and picnic tables and has a bike path. Surfing, surf fishing, sailing, and windsurfing are popular activities at this beach.

The Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine is a meditation and retreat center. Situated on a 10-acre site, the property features well-landscaped gardens and a pristine reflecting pool. The Lake Shrine is considered a “church of all religions” and includes shrines representing different world religions. To visit the meditation garden at Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine, which is open from Wednesday through Sunday, requires a reservation.

This moderate-level, 2.2-mile out-and-back trail offers a rewarding hike through a verdant canyon, ending at a majestic waterfall. The trail winds through a scenic landscape of trees, streams, and rocky outcroppings. While the waterfall’s flow can vary depending on the season, it’s a lovely sight to stumble upon amidst the surroundings. This trail is ideal for those looking for an escape from the city and a chance to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. To reach the start of the trail, from the PCH, head north (inland) on Sunset Boulevard for about 0.5 miles. Turn left on Palisades Drive. After about 2.5 miles, turn left onto Vereda De La Montura.
