Carol Mithers, a journalist focusing on Los Angeles and extraordinary women, will be discussing her book Rethinking Rescue: Dog Lady and the Story of America’s Forgotten People and Pets with L.A. Times Columnist Robin Abcarian. The book follows Lori Weise, the Dog Lady, a woman who has spent decades caring for people in poverty and the animals that love them.

Natalie Jacob, a seasoned jazz vocalist, will be dropping her debut album with this release show featuring an all-star band including Scotty Barnhart, Grammy-winning producer of the Count Basie Orchestra. Featuring Vinalia Wine at little lunch, this will be Venice Wine Club’s last tasting of the summer with wines hailing from Eastern Europe. Start the night off right with the wine tasting followed by an open bar. Venice Beach Wine Club is a social club for the wine lovers of Venice Beach with weekly meetups for good wine and nice banter.

Watch butterflies flit around you for the remainder of this seasonal exhibition. Walk among the enchanting insects and colorful plants indigenous to California with plenty of natural light to allow guests to see these creatures shimmer with clarity. With lots of flight space and plenty of resting spots, the Butterfly Pavilion provides one of the best views in Los Angeles.

A solo performance with Gail Thomas, one woman who has beaten cancer and cut toxic people out of her life finds herself with no one left. Thomas is a Moth Story SLAM winner so expect a rollicking good time. On stage, she encourages audiences to fully participate in life by knowing when to let go.

Leo Carrillo Park offers day-use parking lots, and a campground open nearly all day, closing at 10 p.m. With one and a half miles of beach for swimming, surfing, and beachcombing as well as tide pools, coastal caves, and reefs to explore, there’s sure to be something for everyone. Named after the famed actor and preservationist, the park also features back-country hiking trails at a variety of difficulty levels. For an extra special day, bring your favorite four-legged friend around to splash in the waves alongside you.
