In August, Los Angeles City Controller released a report stating that there were nearly 40,000 eviction notices slapped on renters from February – July 2023 filed in the City of L.A.

On Monday, the controller’s office, through a press release, reported that they have received updated data from the Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD) through the month of August 2023 stating an additional 10,000 evictions*. Ergo, from February – August 2023, a staggering 50,000 eviction notices were filed with the City of L.A.

The controller’s office went on to break down additional statistics and information as follows:

  • 96 percent of eviction notices were for “non-payment of rent”
  • 91 percent came with a 3-day notice to cure or quit
  • The number of evictions represents $186.5 Million in accumulated rent owed

*In the month of August, 5,575 eviction notices were filed. An additional 4,748 notices received by mail for February — July were also included in the update to previous numbers.

According to the Just Cause Ordinance, a landlord cannot evict a tenant if the amount due is below one month of Fair Market Rent. However, 6,062 eviction notices were filed where the amount of rent owed was below the Fair Market Rent limit.
