Motorcycle Crash Near Downtown Tacoma Leaves Two Dead, State Patrol Says

Two people were killed Saturday night after a motorcycle crash near downtown Tacoma, according to the Washington State Patrol. Troopers said the man and woman died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision.

The crash prompted a multi-hour road closure as investigators worked to document the scene and determine what led to the incident.

Crash

The collision occurred at about 8:20 p.m. as the motorcycle was traveling northbound on state Route 509 from Pacific Avenue, the Washington State Patrol said.

Troopers reported that the motorcycle struck a barrier and came to rest in the second of three northbound lanes. No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the crash.

Both riders were pronounced dead at the scene.

Victims

On Sunday afternoon, the Washington State Patrol identified the victims as Rene Herrera Dimas and Maria Luisa Herrera Roman. Both were 39 years old and residents of Tacoma.

Authorities did not release additional details about the riders’ relationship or whether protective equipment was being worn at the time of the crash.

Road Closure

State Route 509 was closed for more than three hours following the crash to allow investigators to examine the scene and clear debris from the roadway. Traffic was rerouted while troopers completed their investigation.

The roadway later reopened once the scene was cleared.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Troopers have not said whether speed, impairment, or road conditions may have been factors.
