There’s more to do in Westwood than enroll in classes at UCLA. From world-class museums and historic landmarks to chic shops, there’s something for everyone in this charming neighborhood. Here’s our guide to a fun staycation!

Stroll in the UCLA Mathias Botanical Garden

The UCLA Mathias Botanical Garden is a hidden gem. This tranquil oasis offers a diverse collection of plants from around the world, inviting guests to explore verdant gardens, serene ponds, and colorful flower beds. The garden’s commitment to education and conservation is evident in its informative signage and engaging programs. Take a relaxing stroll while you immerse yourself in the beauty of nature at the UCLA Mathias Botanical Garden.

Lunch at Tulsi Indian Eatery

Tulsi Indian Eatery, a newcomer to the neighborhood, has quickly garnered attention for its inventive approach to Indian cuisine. By focusing on regional specialties and infusing age-old dishes with modern flair, Tulsi offers a dining experience that caters to both seasoned Indian food enthusiasts and those new to the cuisine. Signature dishes include Pani Puri Shots, Pav Bhaji, Bombay Bhel, Samosa Chaat, Chole Bhature, Paneer Kathi Roll, and Chicken Tikka Masala. I ordered the Three Curry Combination ($17), which included Chicken Tikka Masala, Paneer Makhani, and Amritsari Chole, served with a portion of lentils and bread. I loved that the dishes were homestyle, bursting with flavors, and well-priced.

Visit the Hammer Museum

Discover the Hammer Museum, a vibrant hub for contemporary art. Founded by Armand Hammer in 1990, this cultural institution celebrates both established and emerging artists, particularly those from underrepresented communities. Immerse yourself in the museum’s current exhibitions, which include an exhibit on climate justice, a retrospective of Christina Ramberg’s work, and a showcase of serial imagery in printmaking. Hammer Museum offers free admission, parking is $8 for the first three hours with museum validation, and $3 for each additional 20 minutes, with a $22 daily maximum.

Unwind at the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden

The Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden is a captivating blend of art and nature. Managed by the Hammer Museum, this expansive garden showcases over 70 modern sculptures amidst five acres of lush, landscaped grounds. The sculptures, ranging from figurative to abstract, harmoniously interact with the surrounding environment, offering a tranquil escape from the city’s clamor. While reservations are necessary, admission to the garden is free.

Retail Therapy at Westwood Village Square

Westwood Village Square, a bustling commercial center offers a distinctive blend of retail therapy, dining spots, and entertainment options. Its iconic architecture and welcoming atmosphere have made it a well-loved destination for locals and tourists. While the square has undergone significant transformations over the years, it continues to be a cherished landmark, showcasing the dynamic spirit of Westwood.

Dinner at Emporium Thai

Emporium Thai serves an authentic taste of Southern Thailand. Its quaint interiors and innovative menu have solidified its reputation as a leading destination for Thai cuisine in West Los Angeles. Top dishes are the Crispy Chicken Dumplings, Phuket Wings, Tom Yum, Papaya Salad, Drunken Noodles, Thai Fried Rice, Yellow Curry, and Thai Basil. I tried Chicken Thai Basil ($25), which was served with a bowl of rice. It was a fiery stir-fry of tender chicken, crisp basil leaves, and chili peppers in a rich, flavorful sauce.

Catch a Show at Geffen Playhouse

This esteemed institution, founded by Gilbert Cates in 1995, boasts a rich history of producing thought-provoking and critically acclaimed plays. Presently, you can catch a variety of shows at the Geffen Playhouse, from classic dramas and modern comedies to world premieres and acclaimed musicals.

Nightcap at Broxton Brewery & Public House

Broxton Brewery offers a delightful blend of handcrafted beers and comforting cuisine. This historic building houses a spacious patio, a grand bar, and a dining room perfect for gatherings. Beer enthusiasts should try the Hoppy IPA or the Solo Expedition: Nectaron IPA, a hazy triple IPA bursting with tropical fruit flavors. From the food menu, we recommend the BBQ Chicken Sandwich, Smash Burger, Chipotle Quesadilla, or Kale Caesar Salad.
