West Los Angeles, nestled midway between the bustling heart of Downtown L.A. and the laid-back charm of Santa Monica, is a gem brimming with unique experiences that capture the essence of Los Angeles. Discover the best of this vibrant neighborhood with our 24-hour itinerary.

Breakfast at Community Goods

Begin your day with a hearty breakfast at Community Goods, a charming cafe that’s become a favorite among locals and tourists. The cafe is small and quaint, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The decor is simple and stylish, combining age-old and contemporary elements. Community Goods serves a range of American breakfast and lunch items and a selection of mouth-watering pastries and desserts. Order the Breakfast Sliders, Pistachio Toast, Tahini White Chocolate Croissant, Tuna Sandwich, or the Ricotta Bundt Cake, and you will not be disappointed!

Explore the Street Art on Melrose Avenue

Next up, check out the eye-catching street art on Melrose, a beloved shopping and dining district. From Fairfax Avenue to La Brea Avenue, the Melrose Arts District is a colorful canvas decorated with murals that stretch for blocks. Renowned pieces such as the iconic Paul Smith Pink Wall, the Keith Haring Mural, and the Aesthetics Worldwide mural, alongside the works of local artist Sara Sandoval, contribute to this arresting artistic landscape.

Lunch at Carmel

Thereafter, check out Carmel for a lip-smacking lunch. Carmel brings the energy and diverse flavors of Tel Aviv’s iconic Shuk HaCarmel market to the heart of West L.A. Chef Asaf Maoz reimagines ancient Levantine cooking techniques through a modern lens, using traditional methods like wood-fired ovens and open flame grills. The eatery’s signature lunch dishes are the Fisherman Sandwich, Short Rib Bourekas, Shakshuka, Carmel Wagyu Burger, and Challah Bread French Toast. I tried the Carmel Wagyu Burger ($27), served in a brioche bun, with melted white cheddar, jalapeño mayo, homemade BBQ, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. The burger was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and very filling.

Walk Off Lunch at Pan Pacific Park

Spread over 300 acres, this verdant part is a sanctuary for outdoor enthusiasts. Joggers and cyclists can explore picturesque trails that wind through the park, while families can unwind in the expansive playgrounds and picnic areas. This lush green park is also home to barbecue pits, a baseball field, basketball courts, and a multipurpose sports field. Walk around and enjoy.

Vintage Clothes Shopping on Melrose Avenue

Melrose Avenue, a haven for vintage enthusiasts, offers a captivating journey through fashion history. My go-to vintage stores on Melrose Avenue are Decades, a high-end vintage store known for its curated selection of designer pieces, Wasteland, a vintage shop retailing a wide range of styles, from punk to grunge, American Vintage, a well-stocked shop with affordable vintage clothing and accessories and Jet Rag, a popular spot known for its weekly $1 sales.

Dinner at Bludso’s BBQ

Established by James Beard award-winning chef Kevin Bludso, this barbecue spot offers a taste of authentic Texas-style barbecue. Bludso’s commitment to quality ingredients and traditional cooking techniques has earned it a cult following and a reputation as one of the best barbecue spots in West Los Angeles. The restaurant’s signature dish, the Dinosaur Beef Rib boasts smoky, fall-off-the-bone meat. Other popular menu items include the Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Ribs. I ordered the Pulled Pork ($20), which was a delicious pork shoulder that shredded easily and was served with a tangy barbecue sauce.

Catch a Comedy Show at the Hollywood Improv

The Hollywood Improv, an iconic institution, has long served as a launch pad for comedic talent. This venue has witnessed the rise of several comedic stars, from Jay Leno to Dave Chappelle. Beyond its storied history, the Improv remains a dynamic hub of creativity. It hosts a diverse range of comedic styles, from stand-up to improv, sketch comedy, and beyond.

Nightcap at Melrose Umbrella Co.

End your West Los Angeles adventure at the speakeasy-esque Melrose Umbrella Co. This intimate cocktail bar transports guests to a bygone era showcasing the art of mixology. The warm, inviting interior, adorned with antique furnishings and eclectic decor, creates a romantic atmosphere perfect for leisurely conversation and indulgence. The drink menu, a testament to the mixologists’ creativity and passion, features a selection of classic cocktails, innovative beverages, and signature drinks.
