As residents of West Los Angeles, we’re lucky that we don’t have to go far to be immersed in lush natural landscapes. We can spend a day in scenic Topanga Canyon, nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains. With majestic mountains, verdant forests, and diverse offerings, the canyon is the perfect spot for a fun-filled staycation. Here’s our guide for the perfect day in Topanga Canyon!

Catch the Sunrise at Topanga Beach and Hike in Topanga State Park

Start your Topanga Canyon adventure by catching an awe-inspiring sunrise at Topanga Beach, where the Pacific Ocean meets the rugged coastline. After that, embark on a picturesque hike through Topanga State Park, which offers breathtaking vistas. In the Park, the Los Leones Trail is an intermediate-level hike that takes hikers on a steep climb to the Parker Mesa Overlook, almost 1,300 feet above sea level. At the top, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and hills.

Grab Breakfast at Topanga Living Cafe

More than just a place to grab a bite, Topanga Living Cafe (TLC) is a creative community space that caters to the needs of locals and tourists alike. I visited the cafe for breakfast and grabbed a table on its charming patio. I ordered the Brekkie Burrito ($18). It comprised a warm, fluffy tortilla filled with a savory combination of scrambled eggs, cheese, and chimichurri potatoes. It was greatly satisfying and packed with flavor. Additional breakfast highlights at TLC include the Greek Yogurt Bowl, Green Goddess Wrap, Huevos Rancheros, and TLC Waffle.

Shopping at Topanga Center

Topanga Center is a tranquil oasis of retail therapy. This intimate shopping center boasts a mix of local boutiques, specialty stores, and delightful eateries, making it a one-stop shop for those seeking a more unique retail experience. With its quaint architecture, lush greenery, and lively atmosphere, Topanga Center offers a refreshing departure from the usual urban shopping malls.

Indulge in a Light Lunch at Endless Color

Located inside Topanga Center, Endless Color is a hidden gem. It is a restaurant, a wine bar, and a vinyl store. This light-filled eatery features a rustic yet refined design aesthetic and a menu that celebrates fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant’s expert culinary team offers Italian cuisine with a Californian twist. The menu includes woodfired pizzas, pasta, sandwiches, and salads. I tried the Burrata, Prosciutto, and Tomato Pizza ($14). The pizza was perfectly baked. It was simple yet packed with flavor. I could tell that the ingredients were super fresh.

Catch at Show at The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum

After a hearty lunch, check out the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, an open-air theater. This theater hosts a diverse range of performances, including Shakespearean plays, original works, comedy shows, and classic musicals. Established by actor Will Geer in 1973, the theater is a paradise for nature lovers and theater enthusiasts. The Theatricum features an intimate setting—a natural amphitheater encompassing lush greenery and oak trees. It’s a place where you can immerse yourself in live theater while enjoying the serenity of nature.

Enjoy a Delightful Dinner and a Music Performance at Canyon Bistro & Wine Bar

Established in 2007, this eatery serves dishes that marry modern Californian cuisine and classic French flavors. The casual neighborhood restaurant has an eclectic menu of gourmet comfort foods prepared masterfully by its kitchen staff. To complement the delicious food, it offers an extensive wine list, which includes a thoughtfully curated range of domestic and international vintages. Furthermore, the eatery also hosts entertaining live musical performances. I visited the Canyon Bistro & Wine Bar for a weekend dinner and immediately loved the elegant setting and the friendly host and servers.

Nightcap at Inn of The Seventh Ray

The Inn of the Seventh Ray is a distinctive restaurant and lounge. It offers a romantic setting, featuring eye-catching sycamores, waterfalls, winding brick pathways, delicate chandeliers, and fairy lights under the stars. The indoor-outdoor restaurant offers seasonal California cuisine and craft cocktails. I ordered the Lavender Mimosa ($14), a refreshing and perfectly balanced cocktail comprising housemade lavender syrup, lemon, and Champagne. The Mimosa and Bloody Mary are also crowd favorites.
