When you live in Santa Monica, you don’t need to leave to take a vacation. A haven for outdoor enthusiasts, our picturesque coastal town boasts beautiful beaches, a vibrant atmosphere, and diverse offerings, perfect for a fun-filled staycation. In addition to its beaches, this West Los Angeles city is home to a thriving arts scene, world-class dining, and upscale shopping. Here’s our recommended itinerary to make the most of your time in scenic Santa Monica.

Sunrise at Santa Monica State Beach and Stroll on the Santa Monica Pier

Start your day in a quintessential Santa Monica way—on the beach with your feet in the sand. After soaking in an awe-inspiring sunrise and ocean breeze on the two-mile-long Santa Monica State Beach, stroll along the iconic Santa Monica Pier. At the pier, immerse yourself in the lively ambiance, the thrill of amusement park rides, the lively arcade, and picture-perfect backdrop of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains.

Grab Breakfast at Huckleberry Bakery & Cafe and Bike on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail

Huckleberry Bakery & Cafe is a quaint restaurant that is well-loved for its fresh, seasonal ingredients and delectable pastries. The eatery’s signature breakfast dishes include the Fried Egg Sandwich, Vegetable Quiche, Brisket Hash, and Huevos Rancheros. I ordered the Breakfast Burrito ($21), comprised of scrambled eggs, crispy hashbrowns, salsa roja, cheddar cheese, and avocado in a Tehachapi flour tortilla served with house-made tortilla chips. The burrito was flavorful, perfectly spiced, and greatly satisfying. After breakfast, head to the Marvin Braude Bike Trail a short distance away. This trail stretches along the Pacific Coast, providing breathtaking ocean vistas. Enjoy a relaxed bike ride along the trail, taking in the stunning scenery and people-watching.

Shopping on the Third Street Promenade and Main Street

Third Street Promenade offers an inviting pedestrian-only experience with a combination of popular international shops and local retailers. This open-air mall is also home to unique brands such as Cherokee of California, Henna Shoppe, Candles on Tap, Herschel Supply Co., and SofiaMila. Additionally, Main Street features a more laid-back and eclectic shopping adventure with a focus on local businesses and vintage shops.

Lunch at Cassia or Cobi’s

Cassia is a renowned Southeast Asian eatery that pays homage to chef Bryant Ng’s Chinese-Singaporean roots, with French and Vietnamese influences. The restaurant’s Kaya Toast, Spicy Wontons, Cold Sesame Noodles, Koda Farms Chickpea Curry, Singaporean Chili Crab, Beef Rendang, and Hainanese Chicken Confit are crowd-favorites.

Alternatively, check out Cobi’s, a buzzing beachside spot serving an innovative take on Southeast Asian cuisine. I tried the Sri Lankan Coconut Egg Hopper ($19), served with pumpkin curry, lime leaf, and sweet chili pork. I was very impressed by the dish, as it was authentic, bursting with flavor and texture, and hit the spot.

Explore Bergamot Station Arts Center or Catch a Show at The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage

After a delightful lunch, make your way to Bergamot Station Arts Center for an interesting art experience. Bergamot Station is a former trolley barn home to several galleries exhibiting modern contemporary art, photography, and sculpture. It’s also right off of an Expo stop! If you prefer watching live performances, visit the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage, which is a state-of-the-art theater that presents a diverse lineup of dance, music, and more, providing a distinctive cultural experience.

Dinner at Élephante

The welcoming rooftop bar and restaurant transports guests to the Southern Mediterranean. Offering unobstructed ocean views and eye-catching sunsets, Élephante features aesthetically pleasing interiors and a lively ambiance. At this eatery, order the Whipped Eggplant, Mascarpone & Prosecco Arancini, Brussel Sprouts, Big Eye Tuna Tartare, Spicy Vodka Pasta, or the Soppressata Pizza, and you will not be disappointed!

Nightcap at The Georgian Room or TR!P Santa Monica

The Georgian Room is a high-end steakhouse and piano bar in the Georgian Hotel. With live music, Art-Deco interiors, and a sophisticated atmosphere evocative of Old Hollywood, the Georgian Room provides a truly memorable nightlife experience. On the other hand, TR!P Santa Monica is a casual bar and live music venue hosting daily musical performances of diverse genres and events.
