Los Angeles, CA – Following a string of car burglaries and violent assaults on the Westside, Councilman Park led council approval today of her initiative to create an action plan for Real-Time Crime Centers across Los Angeles.
Real-Time Crime Centers leverage advanced video technology, such as Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) and cameras found at local businesses and residences, to supplement law enforcement efforts in preventing and interrupting crimes as they occur.
“Law enforcement can’t be everywhere all at once,” said Councilwoman Park. “Leveraging and incorporating existing video technology into our crime response will be essential to keeping the public safe and holding criminals accountable.”
Real-Time crime centers have proved particularly effective in other cities, big and small. In Beverly Hills, which launched its Real-Time Watch Center in 2022, automated license plate readers helped authorities capture an individual suspected of murdering three unhoused individuals and a Los Angeles County government employee in December 2023.
Councilwoman Park’s motion responds to recent public safety incidents on the Westside, including street takeovers, a surge of car burglaries in Playa del Rey and Venice, and the violent assault of two women at the Venice Canals.
With Council’s approval, the Los Angeles Police Department, in coordination with other City Departments, will report on how Real-Time Crime Centers will be implemented at Los Angeles’ 21 police divisions beyond its current pilot phase in Hollywood, Van Nuys, and Downtown Los Angeles.
