On Women’s Day, March 8th, 29-year-old sexual assault survivor Summer Willis made history as the first woman ever to run a marathon carrying a mattress on her back around Central Park. This symbolic act, representing the burdens carried by survivors of sexual assault, garnered attention and accolades. Summer also raised thousands of dollars for survivors of sexual assault through her efforts.
As the bustling city of Los Angeles gears up for the excitement of the upcoming L.A. Marathon, Summer stands out not only for her athletic feats but also for the profound cause she represents. She is running 29 marathons in a year to focus attention on the cause. L.A. will be number 11.
This weekend, Summer is taking on the challenge of both the L.A. Marathon on Sunday and the 5K on Saturday. However, her commitment doesn’t end there. She will also be hosting an Expo Booth for both days of the L.A. Expo, in collaboration with massage therapists and the UCLA Rape Treatment Center. For Summer, it’s not just about the races—it’s about using this platform to shine a light on an important cause.
So, why should this matter to you? Summer is the driving force behind Strength Through Strides, a charity devoted to helping women survivors of sexual assault find healing and strength. Their innovative 9-week program, complete with community coaching calls led by licensed clinicians, culminates in a 4-day retreat at the Oaks Center near L.A.
The inspiration for Strength Through Strides comes from Summer’s own journey of overcoming trauma. Like one in six women in the United States, she experienced the pain and devastation of sexual assault. This led her down a path of depression, PTSD, and abusive relationships. However, a transformative study abroad experience opened her eyes to her own resilience and the power of community.
Summer’s path led her to advocacy work, teaching, and eventually, founding Strength Through Strides. This charity isn’t just about running marathons—it’s about empowering women to reclaim their lives, find support, and rediscover joy.
Through their fundraising efforts—like Summer’s ambitious goal of running 29 marathons and raising $290,000—Strength Through Strides provides crucial resources for survivors.
This time, Summer is gearing up for a World Record of a different nature. She will be attempting to set the record for the most outfit changes during a marathon, all with a Barbie-themed twist.
But it’s not just about the miles. Summer has learned that true strength comes from unity, from sharing laughter with her children, friends, and even strangers along the route. It’s about the signs of encouragement, the stories shared, and the bonds formed.
As Summer laces up her running shoes for the L.A. Marathon, she carries with her the stories of countless women who have faced similar struggles. Through her Expo Booth, she hopes to raise awareness, funds, and most importantly, a sense of community for survivors.
