The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner on Wednesday identified the victim as 61-year-old Ana Amaral Moreira. Officials said Moreira was inside the laundromat at the time of the crash.
Crash
According to the Manhattan Beach Police Department, the incident occurred just after 6 p.m. at Suds & Duds Coin-Op Laundry on Aviation Boulevard near 10th Street. Police said a woman driving a black SUV entered the parking area and crashed into the front of the business while Moreira was doing her laundry.
Video from the scene showed shattered glass along the storefront and visible damage to a support beam inside the building.
Investigation
Investigators are working to determine why the driver accelerated instead of braking. Police said the driver was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation.
Authorities stated Tuesday that alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash. No arrests have been announced, and police have not released additional details about the driver or whether charges could be filed.
