A woman has died and a man has been arrested following a suspected DUI crash Wednesday evening in the southwest Las Vegas valley, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Police said the crash happened around 5:15 p.m. on June 10 along West Warm Springs Road, west of Montessouri Street. Officers responded after receiving reports of a collision involving two vehicles traveling in opposite directions.
What Police Say Happened
Investigators said evidence collected at the scene, along with witness statements and surveillance video, showed a Toyota Sienna traveling eastbound on West Warm Springs Road while a Tesla Model Y was heading westbound.
According to police, the Toyota crossed into the westbound lanes, prompting the Tesla driver to attempt to steer away. As the Tesla moved to avoid a collision, the Toyota veered back into the eastbound lanes, where the two vehicles collided.
Victim Identified
A 33-year-old woman who was seated in the rear passenger seat of the Toyota was taken to a local hospital in critical but stable condition. Police said her condition worsened several hours later, and she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office is expected to release additional information following standard procedures.
Arrest Made
Police identified the driver of the Toyota as 73-year-old Calvin Hayashi. Investigators determined Hayashi was impaired at the time of the crash, according to Metro police.
Hayashi was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center. He faces charges of DUI resulting in death and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway, jail records show.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
