A Phoenix police officer was injured Friday night after an SUV crashed into a city facility yard and struck a parked patrol vehicle near the Phoenix Police Department’s Mountain View Precinct, authorities said.
Police said the officer was thrown from the patrol vehicle during the collision and was transported to a hospital. The officer is expected to recover.
Crash
The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. Friday near Maryland Avenue and 20th Street, south of Glendale Avenue.
According to Phoenix police, a 58-year-old driver identified as Johnny Newberry was leaving a parking lot when his SUV traveled north, went through a fence, crossed a berm, and entered the police facility yard.
The SUV then struck a parked patrol vehicle that was positioned near the fuel pumps.
Officer
The impact threw the officer from the parked patrol vehicle, police said.
Emergency responders transported the officer to a local hospital, where officials said the officer was listed in stable condition and is expected to be OK.
No other injuries were reported.
Investigation
Phoenix police said investigators believe Newberry was impaired at the time of the crash.
During the investigation, officers reportedly found a firearm and drug paraphernalia inside the SUV.
