One person died after being trapped inside a house fire late Sunday night in Aurora, according to fire officials.
Aurora Fire Rescue responded to a reported structure fire in the 12600 block of East Bates Circle just before 10 p.m. A resident who called 911 told dispatchers that a fire had broken out and that another person was still inside the home, Sentinel Colorado reported.
When firefighters arrived, they began fire suppression operations and searched the residence. Crews located one adult victim inside the home and determined the person had died at the scene, Aurora Fire Rescue said. No firefighters were injured, and no additional occupants were found inside the house.
Another adult resident was displaced by the fire. Firefighters also rescued a dog from the home and transported it to a local animal hospital for care.
Fire Response
According to Denver7, the fire was reported at approximately 9:51 p.m. at a home on East Bates Circle, located west of Interstate 225. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and intense heat while working to control the flames.
Officials have not released the identity of the person who died. The extent of damage to the home has not been detailed.
Cause Under Investigation
Aurora Fire Rescue said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire officials often note that smoke and heat can spread rapidly, making it difficult for occupants to navigate hallways, stairways, and exits during an emergency.
Blocked escape routes and reduced visibility can prevent residents from leaving safely, even in homes they know well.
Fire Safety Guidance
Fire safety experts emphasize preparation as a key factor in preventing fatalities. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that households install working smoke alarms inside each sleeping room, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of a home.
The NFPA and the U.S. Fire Administration also advise families to create and practice a home fire escape plan. That includes identifying two ways out of every room, keeping doors and windows clear, choosing an outdoor meeting place, and regularly practicing the plan with everyone who lives in the home.
Once outside during a fire, residents are urged to stay out and wait for firefighters. Re-entering a burning structure can place both occupants and first responders at serious risk.
