A Yakima County judge has sentenced a man to 15 years in prison for a 2025 shooting in Terrace Heights that killed a Seattle-area high school student, court records show.
The case stems from a fatal shooting at a party last spring that left an 18-year-old Garfield High School student dead.
Shooting
The shooting occurred in April 2025 at a party in the 1500 block of South Keys Road in Terrace Heights. Authorities said Salvador Granillo Jr., an 18-year-old student at Garfield High School in Seattle, was shot during an altercation at the gathering.
Investigators said Granillo was attempting to break up a fight when he was shot. He was transported in a private vehicle to a hospital in Yakima, where he later died from his injuries.
Conviction
Prosecutors said Israel Barriga Vargas, 21, was identified as the shooter. Earlier this year, a jury in Yakima County Superior Court found him guilty of second-degree murder.
Last week, the court sentenced Barriga Vargas to 15 years in state prison. The sentence follows months of investigation and trial proceedings related to the shooting.
Arrest
According to a press release from the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, deputies learned of the shooting after receiving a call from the hospital when Granillo arrived seeking treatment.
Barriga Vargas was arrested several days later at a residence in the 900 block of South 90th Avenue. Authorities did not report additional arrests connected to the Terrace Heights case.
Community
Granillo’s death drew attention from both the Yakima Valley and the Seattle area, where he attended high school. Court records indicate Granillo had no involvement in the initial altercation and was attempting to intervene when the shooting occurred.
The case remains a point of concern for local officials as they continue to address gun violence at large gatherings.
Separate Case
In a separate investigation, Sunnyside police are examining another shooting reported earlier this month.
Officers were called to the 400 block of Cemetery Road on May 18, where they found a 31-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was initially taken to Astria Sunnyside Hospital and later transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. His identity and condition have not been released.
Police have arrested a 21-year-old Sunnyside man in that case. Court records show the suspect faces multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder, drive-by shooting, first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, and 18 counts of first-degree assault. Authorities have identified the suspect as an alleged Sureño gang member.
Both investigations remain active.
