A traffic stop in Kitsap County, Washington, took an unexpected turn over the weekend when a deputy’s patrol vehicle was struck by another driver while a DUI investigation was already underway, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred Saturday in the Poulsbo area near the Luoto Road offramp from Highway 3.
Traffic Stop
Deputies were initially investigating a suspected DUI driver when a second vehicle approached the scene from behind. According to authorities, the 22-year-old driver failed to properly navigate the roadway and collided with the rear of the parked patrol car.
The sheriff’s office said the patrol vehicle was positioned as part of the active traffic stop when the crash occurred.
Driver Account
Investigators said the 22-year-old driver told deputies he saw the emergency lights but misjudged the lane in the dark conditions. Law enforcement later reported there was no evidence that impairment played a role in the crash.
Officials did not release the driver’s name.
Injuries
The deputy involved was outside the patrol car at the time of the collision and was not injured. The 22-year-old driver sustained minor injuries and was evaluated following the crash.
No additional injuries were reported.
Investigation
Authorities have not announced any charges related to the crash. The sheriff’s office said the situation remains under review as standard procedure for incidents involving law enforcement vehicles.
The original DUI investigation that prompted the traffic stop also continued separately, according to officials.
