A 26-year-old San Diego man died Sunday night after a crash on Interstate 5 in the Clairemont area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Incident
The crash occurred around 11:41 p.m. as the man was driving an Infiniti sedan northbound on I-5 near Clairemont Drive. CHP officials said the Infiniti rear-ended a Honda SUV for reasons that are still under investigation.
After the initial collision, the Infiniti continued off the roadway and crashed head-on into a concrete pillar.
Injuries
The driver of the Infiniti was transported to a hospital with major injuries, where he later died. Authorities said the driver and passengers in the Honda SUV were also taken to the hospital, though their injuries were described as minor.
Investigation
CHP said a toxicology report is pending to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. Investigators are continuing to examine the cause and sequence of events leading up to the collision.
The identity of the 26-year-old driver has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
