Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is suspected of being involved in a hit-and-run crash in Napa County on Friday afternoon, according to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.
Incident
Sheriff’s officials said the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on the 6700 block of Yount Street in Yountville, about 50 miles north of San Francisco. Investigators said a vehicle driven by Pelosi allegedly struck a legally parked and unoccupied car, causing major damage to the rear of the vehicle.
A witness reported that the driver briefly stopped after the collision but then left the scene. The suspect vehicle was described as a brown-colored convertible.
Investigation
Deputies said they later located the suspect vehicle partially blocking Yountville Cross Road, with a California Highway Patrol vehicle parked behind it. Authorities identified the driver as Paul Pelosi, 86.
According to the sheriff’s office, the vehicle had significant damage to the front right side. Deputies said Pelosi admitted he struck something but told them he did not know what he hit and continued driving until his vehicle became disabled.
Investigators ruled out alcohol as a factor in the crash. Pelosi was not arrested, with the sheriff’s office citing California misdemeanor arrest laws.
Next steps
The sheriff’s office said a California Department of Motor Vehicles re-evaluation referral form will be submitted, noting that such referrals are common for elderly drivers.
The case has been forwarded to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office for review.
Family statement
In a statement provided to CBS News, a spokesperson for the Pelosi family said Paul Pelosi personally apologized to the owner of the damaged vehicle and assured them he would take responsibility for the repairs.
“Speaker Pelosi will not be commenting further on this private matter,” the statement said.
