A man was killed and two other people suffered critical injuries following a suspected DUI crash early Saturday morning in Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
The collision happened at the intersection of East Washington Avenue and North Bruce Street and involved a Nissan truck and a Ford Mustang.
Police say speed, impairment, and failure to yield appear to have contributed to the crash.
Crash
LVMPD officers responded to the intersection around 5:36 a.m. Saturday following reports of a serious collision.
According to investigators, a Nissan truck driven by a 49-year-old man was traveling westbound on Washington Avenue in a designated left-turn lane. Police said the driver began turning onto North Bruce Street while approaching what officers described as a “fresh” yellow traffic signal.
At the same time, a Ford Mustang traveling eastbound on Washington Avenue entered the intersection.
Police said the Mustang was driven by 21-year-old Maria Gonzalez-Medina, who was approaching the intersection in the left lane at what investigators described as excessive speed.
According to LVMPD, the Mustang continued into the intersection as the traffic light changed from yellow to red.
The Mustang then struck the Nissan during the turn.
Victims
Authorities said the impact caused the Nissan driver to be ejected from the vehicle.
Emergency responders pronounced the 49-year-old man dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been publicly released pending notification of family members.
The driver of the Ford Mustang and a passenger inside the vehicle were transported to a hospital.
Police said both individuals suffered life-threatening injuries.
Arrest
Investigators stated that Gonzalez-Medina showed signs of impairment following the crash.
She was arrested and booked in absentia on charges related to driving under the influence and reckless driving.
LVMPD has not yet announced whether additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
DUI-related crashes remain a major concern for law enforcement agencies across Nevada, particularly during holiday weekends and overnight hours when impaired driving incidents tend to increase.
Investigation
Police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, including vehicle speed, traffic signal timing, and impairment evidence.
LVMPD officials noted that the fatal crash marked the department’s 48th traffic-related death within its jurisdiction in 2026.
Officials also connected the incident to broader traffic safety concerns involving speeding and impaired driving.
Lt. Cody Fulwiler of LVMPD said the collision reflected several of the most common contributing factors seen in fatal crashes throughout the region.
Safety
The crash occurred during what law enforcement agencies often refer to as the “100 Deadliest Days,” the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when fatal crashes historically increase nationwide.
Traffic safety officials frequently warn drivers about heightened risks connected to speeding, alcohol use, distracted driving, and heavy holiday travel during the summer months.
LVMPD also referenced another recent fatal crash on Boulder Highway in which speed reportedly played a role.
Officials urged drivers to slow down, avoid impaired driving, and exercise caution at intersections.
Police say investigations into the Washington Avenue crash remain ongoing.
