The family of a 58-year-old woman found shot to death inside a Las Vegas home is calling for justice as police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
Dorothy Baines was found dead last Saturday inside a residence near Lake Mead Boulevard and Decatur Boulevard. The case remains under investigation, and no arrest has been made.
Discovery
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to the home after a man called 911 and reported that his roommate had been shot.
Investigators said their preliminary findings indicate that a verbal argument between Baines and her roommate escalated into a physical struggle over a firearm. During that struggle, the gun discharged, fatally wounding Baines.
Family Concerns
Baines’ daughters dispute the police account and say they do not believe their mother’s death was accidental.
They told reporters they believe the incident was the result of domestic violence and not a spontaneous struggle.
“I feel like she was getting ready to pull away, and he felt that, and he didn’t like that,” said Baines’ daughter, De’Ja Taylor. “It was like if I can’t have you, no one can.”
The family also expressed frustration with how they learned about Baines’ death, saying they first found out through media reports rather than direct notification from police.

Baines’ daughters said they did not receive an update from police until several days after the incident, adding to their concerns about transparency as the investigation moves forward.

Police confirmed that the roommate was initially detained but later released. No charges have been filed at this time.
On Thursday, LVMPD said that once detectives complete their investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for review.

“We are hoping that they gather all the information and put him away. Justice needs to be served,” said Baines’ daughter, Tiana Hill.

“She was awesome, she was amazing, so bright and giving,” Taylor said. “I think her heart is what got her here in the first place.”
