Ohio authorities have removed 16 children from a rural home in Vinton County and arrested four adults after investigators found the children living in what officials described as severely unsafe and unsanitary conditions. Several of the children required immediate medical treatment, and two were transported by helicopter to trauma centers, according to state officials.
Discovery
The children were found during a search of a home in Hamden, about 60 miles southeast of Columbus. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said investigators encountered conditions that posed an immediate risk to the children’s health and safety.
Wilson said some of the children were in serious condition when they were discovered and that delays in intervention could have resulted in fatalities. All 16 children were removed from the home and placed into protective care.
Conditions
Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain said the home contained extensive fecal contamination and bacterial matter. He described the environment as unsafe and unsuitable for children.
Cain said the conditions inside the home were so poor that livestock are often housed in better circumstances. Officials did not release photos of the interior but said the scene required significant coordination between law enforcement, medical responders, and child services.
Medical Response
Emergency responders evaluated all of the children on scene. Several required medical treatment, and two were flown to Level 1 trauma centers due to the severity of their injuries. Officials have not released specific details about the children’s medical conditions.
Authorities said the ages of the children ranged from approximately 18 months to 18 years old and included both boys and girls. Officials did not confirm whether all of the children were biologically related.
Arrests
Four people were arrested in connection with the case: Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders. Each was charged with 16 counts of second-degree child endangering.
During a court hearing Wednesday, a judge entered not guilty pleas on behalf of all four defendants and set bond at $300,000 each. Prosecutors said additional charges could be considered as the investigation continues.
Clarification
Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer said the case is an intra-family situation and does not involve human trafficking. He also stated that the suspects are not originally from Vinton County and that authorities do not believe there is a broader threat to other children in the community.
State Response
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said he was briefed on the case and expressed concern for the children involved. He thanked law enforcement officers, child services workers, and medical personnel for their response.
Attorney General Wilson said the investigation remains ongoing and emphasized that the focus remains on the safety and recovery of the children.
