One person was killed following a four-vehicle crash that closed a portion of southbound Interstate 15 near Miramar late Sunday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Incident
CHP officials said the collision occurred at approximately 10:27 p.m. Sunday. A Ford Escape driven by a 32-year-old man was traveling southbound when it was struck by an Audi RS7 driven by a 21-year-old. The impact pushed the Ford into the right shoulder wall of the freeway.
After hitting the wall, the Ford Escape caught fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released his name, pending notification of next of kin.
Other Vehicles
Investigators confirmed that a motorcycle and another vehicle were also involved in the crash. The motorcyclist sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. No serious injuries were reported for occupants of the remaining vehicle.
CHP did not specify how the additional vehicles became involved but said the crash sequence is still under review.
Investigation
The cause of the collision remains under investigation. CHP stated it is working to determine why the Audi RS7 collided with the Ford Escape. Alcohol or drugs were not immediately identified as contributing factors, and no arrests have been announced.
The crash led to the temporary closure of southbound lanes of Interstate 15 as crews responded, cleared debris, and conducted their investigation.
Public Assistance
CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information that may assist investigators to contact CHP San Diego at (858) 293-6000.
Officials emphasized that witness statements can be critical in understanding the circumstances leading up to multi-vehicle collisions, particularly when severe damage limits available evidence.
The roadway was later reopened after cleanup and investigation efforts were completed.
