Authorities in Ventura have arrested a 32-year-old man accused of violently attacking and raping a woman as she walked through a local park late Sunday night. Prosecutors say the assault was unprovoked and involved significant force, triggering multiple felony charges and special allegations.
Suspect Arrested Minutes After Attack
Police identified the suspect as Jannier Misael Urbina-Avila, a Ventura resident. According to investigators, the assault occurred around 11 p.m. on Nov. 9 as the victim walked through Kellogg Park on North Ventura Boulevard.
Detectives say Urbina-Avila allegedly grabbed the woman without warning. When she resisted and screamed for help, he reportedly covered her mouth and dragged her into a cluster of bushes, where the assault continued. Residents nearby heard the screams and immediately called 911.
Officers arrived within minutes, locating the victim and spotting Urbina-Avila running from the scene. After a short foot pursuit, police detained him. Authorities confirmed the suspect and victim did not know each other.
Multiple Felony Charges Filed
On Nov. 14, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against Urbina-Avila, including:
- Forcible rape
- Kidnapping to commit another crime
- Assault with intent to commit rape
Prosecutors also added several aggravating circumstances, alleging the victim was particularly vulnerable and that Urbina-Avila engaged in violent conduct during the attack.
A spokesperson for the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, which operates under the oversight of the California Department of Justice, confirmed the charges on Friday.
He is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on Nov. 24. Urbina-Avila remains held without bail.
Police Chief: “A Horrifying Situation”
Ventura Police Chief David Dickey condemned the attack and praised responding officers.
“This was a horrifying situation that no one should ever have to face,” Dickey said. “Our officers’ quick response prevented further harm and ensured the victim received immediate support.”
