At just 16 years old, Emily Traveller lived a life similar to many teenagers — balancing school, friends, and dreams of college.
She spent weekends cheering at football games and imagining her future. But during the final weeks of her sophomore year, everything changed in a matter of seconds.
A Spontaneous Trip to the Sand Dunes
A Day That Started With Excitement
In late April, right as prom season approached, Emily and a friend made a last-minute decision to join a double date at the nearby sand dunes.
“It seemed like a simple, fun adventure,” she shared during an exclusive Zoom conversation.
After informing her parents, the group packed a UTV (Razor) with snacks and s’mores for the two-hour drive, excited for an easygoing day outdoors.
Enjoying the Outing
The teens spent time picnicking and exploring the dunes. When they prepared to leave, Emily placed a few items on her lap and didn’t buckle her seatbelt since the vehicle was sitting close by. She expected nothing more than a short ride back.
The Accident That Changed Everything
The Moment Everything Went Dark
Just moments after getting into the UTV, Emily’s world went black. The Razor struck a steep hill and rolled four full times. During the violent impact, she hit her head on the roll cage, causing a severe neck injury.
Her friends were also hurt — one suffered a broken collarbone, and another sustained a deep head wound — but Emily’s injuries were far more serious.
A Terrifying Realization
“When I woke up, I couldn’t feel anything,” the Utah teen remembers. “I instantly knew I couldn’t move.”
Campers nearby rushed to assist the injured teens until a medical helicopter transported Emily to Utah Valley Hospital for emergency surgery.
Doctors later explained that she had fractured C5 through C7, and the damage had also affected her spinal cord at C4, leading to immediate paralysis.
Facing a New Life After Surgery
The Emotional Impact
Once the surgery was over and she saw her loved ones gathered around her hospital bed, the weight of the situation became real.
“Suddenly, there were doctors and nurses everywhere, and I couldn’t even breathe without help,” she recalls. Understanding what life in a wheelchair might look like felt overwhelming.
This moment marked the beginning of relearning everything — from basic movement to daily routines — and adjusting to an entirely different life.
