Four Amazon Fresh supermarkets in Southern California are set to permanently close within hours, forcing many residents to look for alternative grocery options.
These closures mark another significant shift in Amazon’s evolving grocery strategy as the company reassesses its physical retail footprint.
Four California Stores Shutting Down
Amazon has confirmed that its Mission Viejo, La Verne, La Habra, and Whittier Fresh locations will shut their doors for good.
According to the company, shoppers living in these regions can continue ordering groceries and everyday items from Amazon’s online grocery platform, which remains fully operational.
Amazon Explains Why Stores Are Closing
Focus on Improving the Grocery Experience
Lauren Snyder, an Amazon spokesperson, explained that the company still sees “plenty of opportunity to make grocery shopping easier, faster, and more affordable” across its 600 physical stores, including Whole Foods Market and Amazon-branded locations.
Assessing Location Performance
However, Snyder noted that not all locations perform at the same level. When certain stores fail to meet expectations, Amazon evaluates their long-term viability and may choose permanent closure as the best course of action.
Support for Affected Workers
Amazon stated that it plans to assist employees impacted by the shutdowns by helping them transition to available roles in other departments or locations within the company.
Growing List of Amazon Fresh Closures
These Southern California shutdowns follow previous closures earlier this year across four U.S. states. Industry experts link Amazon’s decision to multiple factors, including:
- Rising economic pressures
- Shifts in consumer shopping habits
- Stronger competition from rival grocery retailers
Amazon Fresh’s Changing Strategy
A Look Back
California’s first Amazon Fresh supermarket launched in August 2020 in Woodland Hills, signaling Amazon’s major push into the in-store grocery world.
Removal of Just Walk Out Technology
In 2024, Amazon decided to remove its once highly promoted Just Walk Out technology from Fresh stores.
The system previously allowed customers to enter by scanning a credit card, pick up their items, and leave without using a traditional checkout lane. Cameras and sensors automatically tracked and billed purchases.
Number of Amazon Fresh Stores Remaining in California
After these new closures, California will continue to have 23 Amazon Fresh locations, according to data from ScrapeHero.
Other Grocery Industry Changes
The closures come at a time when the grocery industry is seeing widespread realignment.
Price Rite Announces Store Shutdown
This week, Price Rite revealed that one of its long-running stores in Rochester, New York, will also close after operating for about 17 years.
Whole Foods Partners With Too Good To Go
Meanwhile, Whole Foods Market announced an expansion of its partnership with Too Good To Go, a popular mobile app that helps reduce food waste by offering “surprise bags” filled with excess items at heavily discounted prices.
Since joining forces in 2023, Whole Foods and Too Good To Go have reportedly saved around 1.6 million meals from being discarded, a major step toward affordability and sustainability during a time of rising grocery costs.
The permanent closure of four Amazon Fresh stores highlights the company’s ongoing adjustments in the highly competitive grocery market.
While economic pressures, changing consumer preferences, and strategic realignments continue to shape Amazon’s approach, the retailer remains committed to improving the grocery shopping experience.
Partnerships like the Whole Foods–Too Good To Go initiative show that Amazon is also placing emphasis on affordability and reducing food waste as the industry continues to evolve.
