A tragic case of suspected road rage in Alameda County has left a beloved father, grandfather, and business owner dead following a violent confrontation on Nov. 8. Authorities say the fatal encounter unfolded while the victim’s wife and young daughters were still inside the family car.
Family Outing Turns Fatal
According to investigators, 49-year-old Jason Elola was returning to Castro Valley with his family after celebrating his son’s 18th birthday in San Francisco. On their way to get ice cream, the family’s vehicle was allegedly struck by another driver at the intersection of Willbeam Avenue and Norbridge Avenue.
The other driver, identified as 37-year-old Martin Davis Jr., is accused of ramming the Elola family’s vehicle before a confrontation occurred between the two men. What exactly happened next remains under investigation, but first responders noted that Elola suffered severe and visible injuries at the scene. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died.
Suspect Allegedly Left, Then Called CHP
Authorities say Davis initially left the scene but later called the California Highway Patrol, reporting he had been involved in the altercation and was instructed to return. According to statements cited by investigators, Davis claimed Elola cut him off, exited his car, and attacked him.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, which is leading the investigation, said preliminary evidence indicates a physical altercation between the two men stemming from an apparent case of road rage.
Davis was arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into Santa Rita Jail without bail. The sheriff’s office is working with homicide detectives to review statements, witness accounts, and any available surveillance footage.
Community Mourns a Devoted Father
Elola, the owner of a pumpkin patch and Christmas tree farm in Tracy, leaves behind nine children and four grandchildren. A GoFundMe campaign organized for the family describes him as “the heart of our family – a kind, generous, and loving man who brought laughter and warmth wherever he went.”
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, which operates under the oversight of the California Department of Justice, is urging anyone with dashcam footage or who witnessed the altercation to contact investigators at 510-677-3622.
Call for Witnesses
Authorities are seeking video evidence or eyewitness testimony to help reconstruct the events leading up to the deadly confrontation. Community members have also expressed concern about rising tensions and violent incidents linked to aggressive driving across California.
