Police K-9 and Suspect Killed After Violent Standoff in Burbank

A tense confrontation in Burbank on Saturday night ended with the deaths of both a police K-9 and an armed suspect following a shootout near the Interstate 5 Freeway, authorities confirmed.

The incident began at approximately 6:40 p.m., when Burbank Police officers initiated a routine traffic stop near the Buena Vista Street offramp. During the stop, a man in the passenger seat suddenly leaped from the vehicle and fled toward the freeway onramp, scaling an embankment and escaping into a nearby residential area.

K-9 “Spike” Fatally Shot During Search

Officers launched a coordinated search using a police helicopter and a K-9 team. During that search, the fleeing suspect encountered the police dog—K-9 Spike—and shot him multiple times before running off on foot.

Spike was transported to an emergency veterinary facility but did not survive.
The Burbank Police Department later described Spike as an “intelligent and devoted partner” remembered for his loyalty, gentleness off duty, and bravery in service.

Suspect Located and Standoff Begins

Police continued searching through steep, brush-covered terrain near the northbound I-5 freeway. The man was eventually found hiding in dense vegetation near the Buena Vista Street on-ramp. He was still armed with a handgun.

The situation escalated into a joint operation between Burbank Police and Glendale Police, as officers attempted multiple times to negotiate a peaceful surrender. Despite repeated efforts, the suspect refused to comply.

Shootout Erupts After Less-Lethal Attempts

Authorities say officers deployed less-than-lethal munitions to try to force the man out safely. Instead, the suspect opened fire, striking several police vehicles. Officers returned fire, hitting the suspect.

The man—whose identity has not yet been released—was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was recovered beside him.
The California Highway Patrol supported freeway closures during the investigation.

Freeway Closures and Community Mourning

The northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway were closed overnight as investigators processed the scene. As of 6:40 a.m. Sunday, three lanes remained shut down near Burbank Boulevard.

Burbank Police shared a tribute to Spike on social media, writing:
“Spike was an intelligent and devoted partner… known for his gentle nature off duty and his tenacity and dedication while serving. Please keep Spike’s handler, his family, and the Burbank PD in your thoughts as we navigate this tremendous loss.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
