A Puyallup man is facing multiple felony charges after police say a family dispute escalated into an attempted drowning and a confrontation with officers that ended in a shooting.
Brandon Michael Holland, 36, is charged with second-degree attempted murder, burglary, two counts of assault, and two counts of violating a court order. Authorities say the incident began inside the family home and unfolded over several hours on the night of June 5.
Incident
According to a press release from the Puyallup Police Department, officers were called to a residence on 4th Avenue NW after reports of a violent domestic disturbance. Court documents later obtained by The News Tribune detail a sequence of events that began around 7 p.m.
Holland had arrived at the home earlier that day after being removed from a friend’s residence. Police say he was not legally allowed to be there due to existing no-contact court orders. Despite this, family members allowed him to stay, according to investigators.
Dispute
At the time, Holland was lying on his mother’s bed, which is kept in the living room for medical reasons. His sister told police she began vacuuming nearby. Investigators say Holland became upset by the noise and was asked by his mother and sister to get off the bed.
That request led to a confrontation.
Court documents describe Holland becoming angry and aggressive as tensions escalated inside the home.
Threat
As the argument continued, the sister told police she said she was going to call 911 and went outside toward the family swimming pool. At that point, investigators say Holland made a threatening statement to their mother, saying, “That’s OK, I’ll kill her.”
Police allege Holland then ran toward his sister, and both fell into the pool.
Pool
According to the sister’s statement, Holland attempted to hold her underwater. She told investigators she was submerged for 10 to 20 seconds at least once and struggled to breathe before pushing off the bottom of the pool to resurface.
The siblings’ father then ran outside and pushed Holland away, allowing the sister to escape. She grabbed her father’s phone and ran to a neighbor’s home to call 911, police said.
Chase
Investigators say Holland chased after his sister, shouting threats. A neighbor intervened briefly, placing their hands on Holland’s chest to slow him down. That allowed the sister to get inside the neighbor’s garage, which was then closed so she could make the emergency call.
Meanwhile, Holland allegedly returned to the family home.
Standoff
In a separate 911 call, the father told dispatchers his son was trying to break into the house. Police say Holland retrieved a metal baton from his car and used it to smash a small oval window near the top of the door while his father barricaded himself inside.
Officers were dispatched to the scene as the situation continued to escalate.
Shooting
Puyallup Police Officer Zion Gregory was the first officer to arrive, according to the Tacoma Police Department, which is investigating the shooting. Court documents state that Gregory encountered Holland approaching him with the baton.
Police say Holland ignored commands to drop the weapon, shouted at the officer, and told him to shoot. Gregory repeatedly ordered Holland to stop, drop the baton, and get on the ground.
According to investigators, Holland raised the baton over his head and ran toward the officer. Gregory fired three shots, striking Holland twice.
Charges
Holland was taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition and is expected to survive. He later made his first appearance in Pierce County Superior Court.
The case remains under investigation. Prosecutors will determine how the charges proceed as Holland recovers.
