An Indiana man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he shot his girlfriend and two men who tried to intervene while he was allegedly dragging the woman down a sidewalk by her ankles.
Authorities in Muncie say 21-year-old Rylynn Joshua Davis was arrested following the May 10 incident that left 23-year-old Cheyenne Angelina Raines dead and two other men seriously injured. Prosecutors have filed 10 criminal charges against Davis, including murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, kidnapping, criminal confinement, and neglect of a dependent.
Court records show prosecutors are also seeking a firearm sentencing enhancement that could increase the length of any future prison sentence if he is convicted.
Incident
According to the Muncie Police Department, officers responded to reports of multiple shootings in the 2700 block of South Walnut Street at approximately 5:30 p.m.
When first responders arrived, they found three gunshot victims outside a residence. Raines had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her face, chest, abdomen, and back. She was transported to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The two male victims were also hospitalized with serious injuries.
Investigators said officers and a nearby bystander were able to quickly detain Davis at the scene.
Allegations
A probable cause affidavit states that the violence began after Raines attempted to leave the home she shared with Davis.
Police allege that two days before the shooting, Davis prevented Raines from leaving and threw her to the floor, causing her to hit her head. On May 10, investigators say Raines again tried to leave the residence and walked down the street before Davis followed her.
Authorities allege Davis punched her in the head and then grabbed her by the feet, dragging her backward toward the home while she screamed for help.
The interaction was reportedly captured on surveillance video from a nearby property.
Charges Filed Against Davis
| Charge | Description |
|---|---|
| Murder | Death of Cheyenne Raines |
| Attempted Murder | Shooting of two men |
| Kidnapping | Alleged forced restraint |
| Criminal Confinement | Preventing victim from leaving |
| Aggravated Battery | Serious bodily injury |
| Neglect of Dependent | Conditions involving children |
Police said Davis later claimed he acted in self-defense and did not intend to harm Raines.
Witnesses
Investigators say two men driving nearby in a Dodge pickup truck witnessed the incident and stopped to help after seeing Raines being dragged across the sidewalk.
One of the men, identified as Michael Hennessey, later described the scene during an interview with local media.
“At first, I thought it was just two kids messing around,” Hennessey told WXIN. “Then, I looked closer and realized it was a guy dragging a girl down the road by her ankles.”
Witness statements included in court documents allege that Davis immediately opened fire after the men confronted him.
Hennessey said he attempted to take cover behind the truck as shots were fired.
The second man was reportedly shot in the head and airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital in critical condition. Court records described his injuries as severe and life-threatening.
Investigation
Police said Davis fled after the shooting and entered a nearby home. During their search, officers reportedly discovered three young children inside a locked bedroom.
According to investigators, the children – ages 3 years, 2 years, and 3 months – were found alone in unsanitary conditions. Court documents described the room as being in “deplorable” condition, with the children reportedly covered in dirt and feces.
The discovery resulted in an additional neglect of a dependent charge against Davis.
Authorities have not publicly stated the relationship between the children and the defendant.
Court
Davis is currently being held without bond at the Delaware County Jail.
His initial court hearing is scheduled for May 27.
Under Indiana law, a murder conviction alone can carry a sentence of up to 65 years in prison. Additional penalties could apply if prosecutors succeed in securing the requested firearm sentencing enhancement.
The investigation remains ongoing, and prosecutors have not indicated whether additional charges could be filed.
