The Arizona Department of Public Safety is mourning the loss of one of its newest K-9 officers after the young police dog died from an undiagnosed birth defect just months into his service.
K-9 Jack, an 18-month-old Belgian Malinois, had been with the department since February and was assigned to patrol and narcotics detection duties.
Medical Emergency
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, K-9 Jack suffered a medical crisis on the evening of July 9.
Veterinary staff worked to save the dog, but despite their efforts, Jack did not survive.
Cause
Veterinarians later determined that Jack died from an undiagnosed birth defect.
The department said the condition had not been detected before the medical emergency.

“His loss is deeply felt by his handler, fellow team members and all who had the privilege of working with him. Jack will be greatly missed, and we extend our heartfelt thoughts and condolences to everyone affected by his passing.”
